XX/XY is a 12 minute musical battle composed by Liz Liew and Andy Leung, inspired by the competition of life – from the battle of the sexes (female XX / male XY chromosomes) to the competitive spirit of the Olympics and Paralympics, in collaboration with Chinatown Arts Space. XX/XY features video by Ben Spear that explores these themes, highlighting our dysfunctional relationship with the environment. Towards the end, an Urban Youth Junk Band appears, suggesting a more sustainable way forward.

Chinatown Arts Space is delighted to have been selected as one of the twenty participants of New Music 20×12, an independent commissioning programme initiated by Jillian Barker and David Cohen, and delivered by PRS for Music Foundation in partnership with the BBC, The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, and Sound and Music. Here’s an interview in M Magazine.

XX/XY premiered to 12,000 people in London’s Trafalgar Square in 2012 as part of the Chinese New Year celebrations.
